TrioWorks! Success Stories

Cassidy Wilson - Educational Opportunity Centers

In 2016 I graduated high school with big dreams of going to college and becoming a registered nurse. Thanks to the Trio Educational Opportunity Center that dream has come true. In 2017 my life completely changed. My mother finally had the

courage and strength to leave my abusive father and start a new and healthy life for her and her children. This left me terrified and questioning everything. I wondered how I was ever going to be able to get the life I so badly wanted for myself and my own family. I didn’t even have a home, how was I going to be able to go to college? My mom heard about Trio through the unemployment office and with the college spring semester starting in just a few weeks we decided to go to the Alton location and ask for help. The staff there was so welcoming and inviting. They listened to our story and they listened to the dreams and goals we wanted to accomplish. They helped me fill out paperwork for hours and did absolutely everything in their power to help me. This was the first time that I actually had a glimpse of hope that I could graduate college and become a registered nurse.

Fast forward three years later, I graduate nursing school on June 21, 2020. I have already been offered three full-time positions as a registered nurse by three different hospitals. Without Trio, I have no idea where I would be. I would have never found out

about the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act that helped fund me to go to school and I probably would have given up and thought that going to college would be impossible for me. I am so thankful to Trio for not only helping me fill out what seemed like endless amounts of paperwork, providing me with as much information as they possibly could, but also for supporting me every step of the way throughout my journey. Trio took a dream that seemed impossible for me to reach and turned it into my reality.

Andrea Cooper - Educational Opportunity Centers

January 2016 I moved from Memphis TN back to pursue my Masters Degree. Through my journey Ms. Jones has been so supportive, whenever I needed help with my financial aid she was always there, she was always just so kind and encouraging. December 2019 I graduated with my Masters Degree in Professional Counseling. It was no easy journey but the journey was worth it.

“HEC Upward has helped me throughout high school to prepare for college. I not only had my first experience on a college campus and traveling out of state to Washington, DC with Upward Bound, but I gained an internship opportunity with World Wide Technology for two summers. These opportunities along with college prep classes and skill-building have allowed me to flourish throughout my college experience.”

"TRIO has helped me to grow as a student and as an individual. Since I have been a part of the TRIO program; the TRIO staff continues to motivate me and express their sincerity in wanting the best for my future. They also take time to check on me personally and not just a student. Their love and support for me as well as ALL TRIO students gives me reason to be glad that I got on board with the TRIO program."
